Peter Koonce, of the Portland Bureau of Transportation gave a technical presentation about Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) and exclusive pedestrian phasing at intersections. Some of the topics covered included:
- What are LPIs and exclusive pedestrian phases?
- How can they be applied?
- What are the pros/cons of these approaches?
- What are some lessons learned from applications across the country?
Peter’s presentation was followed by a hands-on training session by Chris McLaughlin, of Polara, regarding field application and implementation. Some of the topics included:
- Hands-on demonstration of Accessible Pedestrian Systems (APS), settings, features, and adjustments.
- Demonstration of wireless pedestrian systems that can be deployed without excavation or cabling.
- LPI implementation with specific applications for disabled pedestrian
